About the MFA Artist-in-Residence Program

Residency period:

August 2019 through to mid-May 2020.

Eligibility and Qualifications:

  • Recent MFA (or equivalent) graduates from international art programs are eligible to apply. Students must have graduated no earlier than 2017 and be within three years from graduation.

  • Applicants must have a valid driving license.

Artist-in-Residence receives:

  • 24-hour access to a shared studio located within VCUarts Qatar as well as access to all Painting + Printmaking Studios (which includes Photography facilities).

  • Part-time teaching experience, and mentorship for teaching.

  • Solo or two-person exhibition in Doha with catalogue.

  • Artists-in-Residence are eligible for a $30,000 stipend, plus additional emoluments including housing and auto.

  • Return plane ticket from home location to Doha, Qatar.

Artist-in-Residence responsibilities:

  • Teach 1-2 courses in the Painting +Printmaking Department each semester. Courses may include Basic Drawing, Painting, or Printmaking. Depending on the artist-in-residence’s skill set, there may be a possibility to teach one special topics course of their own design.

  • Maintain office hours for each course taught, participate in departmental/school critiques, lectures, events, and mentor department majors.

  • Assist with freshman recruitment into the Painting + Printmaking major.

  • Develop a body of work within their studio in preparation for a solo or two-person exhibition at the end of the residency.

  • Give a public lecture.

  • Donate 1 work to the VCUarts Qatar collection.

Note: Due to the size restriction of the uploads (9 MB maximum/pdf), the portfolio submission is split into one pdf for text and two pdfs of 10 images each (total of 20 images). Upload the three pdfs under “Required Documents: CV, Cover Letter, and Other.”

DOCUMENT 1:   TEXT

Submit the following items together in one pdf, no larger than 9 MB:

  1. CV

  2. Letter of interest (1 page)

  3. Artist Statement (1 page)

  4. Brief Bio (150-200 words)

  5. 3 references (name, relationship to applicant, address, phone, email)

  6. Documentation List for 20 Images (images submitted in 2 separate pdfs, listed below) 

DOCUMENT 2:   PORTFOLIO, PART 1 (images 1-10)

Submit the images 1-10 together in one pdf, no larger than 9 MB:

  • Portfolio of Images 1-10 should reflect recent work (within 3 years).

  • You may submit a link to a digital portfolio for time-based work. Please include the documentation for linked work on the Documentation list (#6 on Supporting Document 1).

DOCUMENT 3:   PORTFOLIO, PART 2 (images 11-20)

Submit the images 11-20 together in one pdf, no larger than 9 MB:

  • Portfolio of Images 11-20 should reflect recent work (within 3 years).

  • You may submit a link to a digital portfolio for time-based work. Please include the documentation for linked work on the Documentation list (#6 on Supporting Document 1).
